Reflecting on Brains

After completing the brain test, and really thinking about brains, do you agree or disagree with the assessment of your brain? Are we really right and left brainers?

Read the article on the calendar about brains, what connections do you see to Pink's work and to the brain assessment? What are your impressions so far about what we are reading?

Make sure to carry on the conversation and ask questions of one another.

i am 62% right brained, and 38% left brained. I highly agree with the test, and i would say that Daniel Pink would agree with the test too. I'm extremely creative, love listening to music while i work, and can sometimes work in groups, if my group follows me. Does anyone disagree with their results?

Nick- you said that your group has to follow you, but when it's a group activity isn't it supposed to be that the whole group participates and puts their thoughts in too?

After completing the test I heard many of us talking about how their results were almost split in half. I do think that some of us use our right or left sides more, but because many of us had it pretty close to the middle, we do obviously use both. I was 58% right and 42% left. In the book, A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink brings up how every situation we face uses both the right and the left brain, I'm not so sure we're right vs. left, but maybe more middle brained. However, like NickB, I agree with what the test said about me, even though we do use both sides.

I am 43% left brain and 57% right brain. I agree with what the test said because I do think that I'm more right brained. I like to be creative and that definitly goes with the right brain. I'm not very good at math, which is more left brain, but I love listening to music and I like working with groups.

I think my results may be the only one that didn't work out.

I got 50% left brain and 51% right brain.
Besides the fact that I apparently have an extra 1% of brain, I'm more left brained if anything.

I wonder what Pink would say about this?

stephaniel2012 said...

I was 34% Left, and 66% right.
I thought that assessment was actually really accurate. My strongest charactaristic on my right side of my brain was Random. Here's what it was saying about me... "You show a strong ability at random processing. You are good at completing tasks in an unspecified order, and don't waste time creating lists when they aren't needed. You are also able to make "leaps of logic" and make discoveries a sequential thinker could never dream of making. However, you may have difficulty with spelling or certain aspects of mathematics, such as geometric proofs."
I do think lists are good when they're needed, but I don't generally make them, because I know what I have to do in my mind, and I eventually get it done. I'm not quite sure what 'leaps of logic' are though.
I am right brained. Go figure. I draw, write, sing and write music in my spare time. Again, go figure.

A lot of us have been getting 'Park Ranger' as a recomendation for right brainers, why do you think 'park ranger' came up?

robertc2012 said...

I agree with the brain assessment. It said that I am 44% Left and 56% Right. It makes sense, because I am creative yet able to do math and science, etc. I'm 34% RANDOM! Anyone beat that? I know I'm random, too, so I agree with the test. Linear is my worst Left-brain skill, which I TOTALLY agree with. Sometimes I start reading a book in the middle so that I skip all the boring stuff at the beginning, and I infer the rest. I flip through magazines backwards.
This test makes a lot of sense; I agree with the assessment of my brain.

ericak2012 said...

Under the list for right brain there is a catagory for 'concrete' what does this mean?

kaleidoscope_eyes said...

Jay- true, everyone is supposed to contribute. But a group of people trying to contribute will get no where if they don't have a "leader".

robertc2012 said...

Erica- I do wonder about why a Park Ranger is for right brainers. If a park ranger has a random, non-linear mind, they might search a park for trash in a random, unorganized way and miss all the trash. Or a fantasy-oriented park ranger who dreams all day and pretends he is battling a dragon when there is a fire...? I don't see how...

I don’t exactly agree or disagree with the idea that I am a right-brainer. But I do think that people shouldn’t be classified as either-or, there are times when I have to think more open-minded and times when I really can’t. According to the test, I am 67% right-brain and 33% left. I believe that most people think around the middle, and it also depends on what type of situation the person is in. For example, if someone is taking a test, like the SAT or CSAP, I can’t picture the person thinking that right-brained. Where as if the person is writing a story about a princess and dragon, they are going to think more open-minded and have to let in the impossible to be able to write the story.

Looking over the percentages, I agree with what the test says about my brain. I listen to a lot of music, love hanging out with friends and my one of my favorite activities is writing. When I was younger, I also was interested in art – now it’s just writing. I don’t talk a lot, unless I am among friends and I love reading and writing fantasies. And I often change my mind about things.
Does anyone have test results they strongly disagree with?

bayleyk2012 said...

45% left brain and 55% right brain. I agree with the results. I have always been more creative than being able to think logically. Sometimes I'll solve something and other people will be like, why did you do it that way? So I agree with my results. But it ties into Mr. Pink’s book. He talks about being able to detect lies as a right brained trait. It was one of my stronger traits.

I was also really fantasy oriented, which to sum it up is more creative thinking. Creative, or outside the box thinking often comes up in AWNM. Another strong point was group work, which I believe is included under play in AWNM. I like to bounce ideas off other people. Also there is a social interaction there that is amazing. Working with other people can take a project it an entirely different direction.

All right, so I decided to take the test twice and got 47% left brain and 53% right the first time. I took it again to see if it would change, and I got 50% left 51% (Don't ask me about the over 100%- I guess I'm just good like that). So, it is pretty much the same (Kinda). SO i guess, at least within this test its pretty even. I'm not surprised that it was even, though I expected it to lean towards left. I can see in myself that there is a balance, I enjoy English and History but also do well in Science and Math. So if a little lost. I agree with this assesment in that it can tell you your traits, but I don't think it can cut you off from one category.

Ok, now the magpie thing is crazy. I guess it takes more than two hemispheres to make us human.

24% Fantasy-oriented
6% Random (Your least dominant characteristic)

I guess I would agree with some of the assessments of my brain. I definitely think things out, I plan my day and my schedule, and am a critical thinker. However, I am not much of a number person nor think about things in terms of numbers. I do create lists, check them off, and then create new lists to complete tasks. I like to do things in a sequential order that makes sense and is efficient in my mind. As far as the sequential side of things, I do things always in a certain order and often need to see a visual of what someone is talking about in order to process it. To truly learn something, I need to see it and do it.

The one area I am learning more about myself over time is what it described as not seeing the whole picture. This is one area in my life I know I lack. When Mr. Fisch and I present, this is why I think we are a good pair. He is a big picture guy but I complete the practical application side of his ideas in our presentations.

Robert- I think that Park Ranger might be a job for right brainers because it involves wild animals.

To be intuitive, creative, and random is the best way to keep up with wild animals.

Bears don't use logic. They adjust to the situation, in other words they're spontaneous. If the ranger keeping an eye out for them is just as random and intuitive, he's more likely to go to the same place. Possibly even before the bear.

robertc2012 said...

Erica- about the Concrete part of the Right brain (which was my strongest Right ability... 82%): It's not some cement, don't worry. It means that you can process information in a visual way with physical objects or drawings. You have to know why a math problem works, not just how. "It processes information from real objects."

I went and did some more research on the random processing and it says that I have a tendency to turn in things late or incomplete because I was preoccupied with something else. My dad always criticizes me for getting distracted when he tells me to do something, but I can never help it because the other task that I become enthralled with seems more important to me. But it's also telling me that I'm in trouble in college. I believe that.

No, back to Pink now - yes this is a rambling post - I don't think that he would agree with the article and yet at the same time agree. In the introduction of AWNM, Pink is informing about how the left side of the brain deals with text and the right puts it into context. What the article is saying however, (in the context of the magpies) that they assess a situation using the right side of the brain first, and then possibly, if at all, assess with the left side of the brain. People assess with the left side of the brain first when assessing a threat, such as the lizard to the magpie. The example Pink uses, of someone who points a gun at you, first you use the logic that you have stored (gun=bad) and then your right brain causes you to react accordingly. It's competely opposite of the studies that Lesley Rogers did on the magpies.

Pink would agree though that both sides of the brain interact with one another to allow people to function better.

I don't neccesarily agree with all the jobs that it says right brained poeple could do like a forest ranger. I do agree with what they think when they say that I am very intuitive and fantasy oriented in the right brain. I do tend to be creative and I do use my "gut feeling" in some situations. For the left side the test says I am more symbolic and reality based then anything else. I do like using symbols and pictures in learning, but I don't think I'm that reality based. This test also says I'm very linear which means you use a select order to try and get the big picture. I don't think I am that linear because I don't often use this technique in trying to find the big picture for studying for tests.

After the test, I was 60% right brain! I think this test judged me fairly accurately. It used questions that tested how I preferred to learn, and then ran that against what different parts of the brain would prefer. I think that this gives a very basic estimate, and could easily be faked to get a different result. I retook the test and tried to get as Left-brained as I could. I ended up getting 93% left brain! My highest percentage in the fake test, was reality-based, at 54% reality based, which meant that I followed the rules, and I understood the consequences of the things I did. This made sense, that a Left-brainer would look at the world as it is, and not how it could be. On my real test, My highest percentage was 64% in Concrete processing. This meant that I would prefer making visuals, and drawing out math problems to understand why they work, not just accepting it. As a geometry student, I know the importance of such processing, and use it on a daily basis, not only in math, but the world around me. I think that the test overall, was good, but when it got into percentages, it was off in some categories. My lowest percentage was symbolism. It said that I had difficulty in memorization, and understanding what things represent. As a Honors English student, and a former Contemporary literature student, I know the importance of symbolism, and feel like I understand it very well. This confused me somewhat, and I noticed that this test couldn't factor in Skills. I am very good at memorizing, but there wasn't a question that related to it! I also saw how the test couldn't contradict itself by telling me that I was a concrete processor, and also good at symbolism! A more detailed and personalized test would've provided a very accurate result, and would have allowed for anomalies such as skills, and contradictions.

For example, linear is my worst while it is almost your best in the Left brain. Random is 28% for me, yet 6% for you and on the bottom of your Right brain list. But concrete is the highest on both of our Right-brain lists!! Weird!!

Right Brain:

19% Nonverbal (Your least dominant characteristic)

I think that this 'assessment' of my brain is correct. I love to draw and listen to music, all of the time. I'm not a big fan of non-fiction stories either. However, my strongest left brain characteristic is Symbolism. I don't agree with that at all. Symbolism is sometimes difficult for me to understand. It also stated that logic was my weakest. I think it is the other way around; some of my old math teachers used to give the class logic puzzles, and I was usually one of the first to be finished.

I do believe that there is a distinct line between 'left-brainers' and 'right-brainers'. There are so many different characteristics between each category that it is almost impossible for there not to be a line.

While reading the article, I made many connections to Pink's work. He stated in his book that the right brain was the reception for danger. The article stated the same: that a magpie would move from danger. Its left eye would respond to the danger. Pink and the article also agreed on the fact that the right brain regulates the left side of the body, and vice versa.

My results compares to this article and Pink's work as well. Everything that I've read in Pink's book so far has supported a lot of my beliefs and thoughts about my own self. For example, I love to draw and create music; I've examined this, compared it with A Whole New Mind and I've come to the conclusion that I am in fact right-brained. (These aren't the only factors I've cross-referenced, it's only an example.) The test has only strongly backed my beliefs. I also love video games, and my ability to respond to games has become very strong. One of the WRP's I read was about how video games can help people learn. I strongly believe in this. A lot of my math skills depend on logic, and most video games are all about logic. If you don't find the certain way to complete the game, then there is rarely another way to finish the game. In essence it is just another way to show how well you respond to problems and how you solve them.

A Whole New Mind is a great book so far in my opinion. I haven't finished the book, but I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've read. My favorite part is Symphony so far! I love seeing how everything works together with each other, like the cogs of a giant clock. When everything works together, I am happiest.

Oh, and here's something extra. I think this 'left-brain' 'right-brain' thing is all a cycle. A long time ago, during the dark ages and early medieval times, it was good to be left-brained, because then you would earn profit, and prosper. Then the Rennaissance came, and the right-brainers were the people who prospered. Then, as the Industrial Age swept through the countries, it was good to be left-brained again. Finally, now we are turning to more right-brained people to succeed in the world.

I, suprisingly, the big math boy that can't write a good paragraph for his life, is 65% RIGHT BRAINED!?! I highly disagree with this brain test because i am a very logical person. And to figure out now that i'm right brained is the wierdest thing evah!!so i was 65-35 for percentages, and when it came down to the critical stats, i was highest in Linear for left and lowest in sequential for left. For right, i was highest in Non-verbal and lowest in intuitive. for linear, this means that i take facts, put them in an order, and arrange them by catagories. I actually do this a lot so i'm not suprised. for sequential, it means making order from first to last, which i never do really. i can't even think of a time when i did. For Non-verbal, it means interpreting the expressions and faces of people, which i can do, but not to a 57% extent!! that's outrageous to me! For intuitive, it's whether it seems right or not, which i can do, just again not to a 20% extent. i'm pretty sure that they inversed my answers and messed my scores up. though seeing that i spell ever with an a (evah) now i'm not so suprised by the results. i guess it's partially right (haha pun) but not fully correct.

Through the breakdown it makes a bit more sense, but this test isn't exactly 100% right.

I haven't read enough of Daniel Pink to have much of an idea as to what he might think of this.
Since I still pretty ignorant as to what Pink is saying in his book (beyond the obvious) there isn't really much I can say in that respect.

Maxe2012 said...

I got 41% for my left brain and 59% for my right. This does not make sense to me because I have always been a math person. This semester I'm in calc and it's challenging but I understand math a lot better than anything else it just makes sense. But then I started thinking about if I could be right brained and I do think a lot and I like fiction. In the survey result it said right brained people don't adjust well to change but I do. However, almost all of the rest of the results for left brained people I agree with. However, I have a lot of the left brained qualities as well. I think that 41% to 59% is close and I think these results could be a little bit off because it was a pretty short survey and it can’t determine everything about a person’s brain in those few questions. I disagree with my results but I think they are partially accurate.
I think that some of us are either left brainers or right brainers but a lot of us are pretty much half and half.
I think that Pink’s book is interesting and a lot of it is based off of guessing but I think he has a lot of things right. When I was reading his book, based off what he said, I thought I was left brained so his opinion differs a bit from the survey. I think that people don’t know everything about the left and right side of the brains so it is still hard to tell for some people. When I read the cover of Pink’s book I thought that I would be in trouble in the future if right brained people will rule. When my brother saw the book he had an entirely different reaction, since he was right brained. His reaction was to burst out into song singing “I’m gonna rule the future!” I think that stating that right brainers will rule the future isn’t entirely true. I think that pink is exaggerating and I think that a fair amount of his support is based of intelligent guessing but the world is changing constantly so I don’t think anyone can really predict what will happen.

I am 55% right brained
After completing the brain test, I do not believe that a person can be considered one type of brain over the other. The only way that people are categorized that way is because of their tendency to use a certain method of thinking. The reason that they think this way is also from past experiences. They have successfully thought this way before and continue to do so because they have found that this type of reasoning has worked. If they experience that another type of thinking works better, then they would be likely to use that type for the reason that it works better. Like the old adage goes “Practice makes perfect.”
Like in Pink's book, when the picture was shown of the man with the gun the right brain responded. In the article it also said that the Magpie will retreat when it also feels threatened and then the right brain responds. The reason for this is most likely because there is no systematic way of running evading a predator. For example, in all the FBI shows and spy shows, when people are retreating, they usually do it in a very creative way so that they can attempt to fool their attacker.

My results from The Right Brained vs. Left Brained Creativity Test stated that I am 54% left brained and 46% right brained. I do not necessarily agree with the results. My test showed that my left brain’s most dominate characteristic is sequential. I would not have guessed that this would be my highest percentage. I see myself as more as a visual learner, which the test did not agree with. It posted that I only 25% symbolic thinker. However, I do agree with the results that showed that logical (left brained) and concrete (right brained) are my strongest characteristics.

I don’t think one can really pin point if you are fully left or right brained. My belief is that it changes with age, perspective and the situation one is dealing with.

I plan on taking this test again to see if my results are the same. I will keep you all posted on my new results.

I was 44% left brain, and 56% right brain according to the online "creativity test."
According to my test the more dominant side of my brain is the right side that makes me more creative. I would agree with this result because one of the points brought up is that 'left brainers' are more logical, symbolic and nonverbal which I most definitely am not. One of my higher scoring sections on the test was the verbal section(34%). I can find this very believable because I always talk, I really do. Not only when I just talk to people in person, but when I write, email or when I text message. Another one of my strong sections was reality based(34%). According to the test, "You have difficulty seeing the whole picture, especially at the beginning of a project. You tend to process information you receive from its parts to its whole in a straight, progressive manner. When given a task, you tend to not bother asking "why," but instinctively are able to do it." This basically sums up how I feel and participate in class. If Smith asks us to see the big picture I tend to have some trouble, but once I begin to gather information I can usually end up doing the project successfully.
I do believe that each and every person has a more dominant left or right brain side. Most people are somewhere in the middle but usually one side dominates. As Daniel H. Pink does mention in AWNM, both brain sides are necessary in our everyday life.
One connection in the article to AWNM was how Daniel H. Pink mentions a study that shows that a man missing part of his left brain tended to do better in right brain activities and vise versa. In the article the lizard needs both sides of its brain to function and live its life day to day.
So far, I have enjoyed and agreed with most everything in AWNM. I understand what Daniel H. Pink is saying and would agree and support his theories and studies.

I am 63% right brained and 37% left brained. I actually wasn't surprised about this because I enjoy music, writing and trying to see all the options before making a decision. When I was young, I wrote poems and short stories for fun regularly. The test also says that I am intuitive and random. I feel that is true because I can think of times when my gut feeling told me to do something or not, which would explain my randomness too. I do associate people, things and feelings with colors, an idea randomness brings up. As far as Daniel Pink goes, I think that his book and his opinions are very true and important, but we still need to know that not all left-brained things are going to be completely taken over by computers. For example, a couple could buy a house on the internet quickly and easily without the help of a realtor. But they might be able to find a better home with a realtor who can symphathize with their wants and feelings. Yes, Mr. Pink is driving us in the "right" (haha) direction but we still need to remeber that not all things will be done like a human could do it.

AustinW2012 said...

I'll start by posting that my score is 55% right-brained and 45% left-brained. I think this is inaccurate because the subjects in school that I tend to do well in are math and science which are linked with the left side of the brain. I think the problem with the quiz arises in the fact that the answer I may have put down may vary from how I actually am. This is because how I view myself might be different from the people sitting next to me. It also states on the results that the right half of your brain controls the left half of your body but I am right handed and generally favor my right side. The weird part of it is after the test in little paragraphs it seems to explain some things that are true for me based on my score. Also, with the article and the birds looking with certain eyes I was wondering if this connects to the thing that police do when interrogating suspects they can tell if they are lieing by which way they look. Back to the test it says that I cannot do algebra very well but it is my best subject currently. On the other hand it says I tend to choose answers on tests because of a gut feeling and get the answers right. This is true in most cases if I do not know the answer I choose the one that "speaks" to me and sometimes it's right. It also says I have trouble following things in logical order. I usually rely on logical order for getting to conclusions but the path I follow is usually one that most people would not understand or think is logical. One thing that is also states is true is the fact that I like to see the whole picture and then work backwards from there to get to the individual parts. Another false statement they made is that I need to draw out math problems in order to solve them and while this helps me I usually tend to do math in my head as much as possible. I think it's odd how it says my strongest characteristic is choosing things from a gut feeling and my weakest is logically choosing things because I usually tend to use them together to come to a decision. In the end I think it is mostly accurate but to formulated to really guess anything for sure. I also wonder if I am really better with my left hand. I still think I am left-brained no matter what the test says.

I am 54% left-brain and 46% right-brain. I agree somewhat with this test, but I decided to look at the discalimer that is at the top of the quiz. It says that we should not take this quiz as accurate information, which I would most definately agree with. I disagree with my assesment of my brain in some ways. For one, I feel as if the quiz is for the average american person, or a robot or something. Each person is different and unless the computer can know everything about a life, the test cannot show everything about a person, although sometimes it will be close. I believe that in some ways we are right and left brainers, but other times (being humans) we must go outside of the 'label' depending on the different circumstances.
The article that we were supposed to read was very interesting, I would have never thought to look at how magpies watch their predators. But this is the same way with the tests that Mr. Pink wrote about, these tests showed the differences of right and left brains. So far, the reading is very intersting and this is a very fun topic to learn.

I had actually done some research on the subject in the past purely because I found it interesting. And America's top selling toothbrush color is blue. But i found this test fairly accurate. I already knew that i was way right brained. Usually i remember how to spell a word by visualizing a page in a book with it on it. I can remember what page certain quotes are on if they are near the page numbers. I love to draw and paint. I spend time normal teens would be reading gossip magazines pondering abstract ideas, or photoshoping my eyebrows off. Of course, I also read Wired and have been reading Newsweek since elementary school. Occasionally, i will go on a "left brain binge" and clean like a madman, get every little everything painfully organized, and even make a to do list. So i guess I even out eventually. My scores were 30 to 70. In the description, it said that this was highly dominant, and that I should be paid special attention to. 0_o
My most dominant characteristics were logic and concrete. Concrete sounds like something that is defiantly not me. But the description made sense: Concrete processing is a method associated with the right hemisphere that is used for processing things that can be seen or touched. It processes much of the information you receive from real objects. For example, a right-brained person is not just satisfied that a mathematical formula may work, but will want to know why it works. A strongly concrete person often finds it easier to solve a mathematical problem by "drawing it out" because it allows them to visualize it. The more a concrete person can visualize something the easier it is for them to understand it. I am defiantly a visual person. If I want to remember someone’s birthday, I write it out in the air. Logic defiantly is one of my traits. In fact, many people get mad at me for seeing the bare bones of things. I often take just a fact and build and build and build until I reach a completely unrelated conclusion. I suppose this could be considered random, but one person’s logic is random to another who doesn’t hear the thought process.
Daniel Pink’s work could logically be brought to the slightly random conclusion that the human brain “evolves” to fit the need of the era. People have been trained and bred to be left brained, and now we have a surplus, and a need for more right brained people. So naturally, it happens, and the first ones to get there pick up a profit. I researched this theory that ADD was a trait that was desirable in a hunter gather society, and it is now evolving out of humans. But I digress. The article on magpies was really interesting. I would like to read a longer in depth article on the subject at some point. What I think is really cool is that Magpies can use their eyes separately. Even before you add the brains to the mix, that is really cool. I think that that indicates that the two halves of their brains work more separately than ours. I could explore this forever, and I think I will later. Any thoughts?

I'm here in the library, and I just had a weird connection.
I was doing a "problem of the week" for math and had just found the answer to the problem. However, I still needed to fill out the rest of the sheet, such as "Confirmation" and "Conclusion/Connections". But I went straight to "Solution" with my non-linear brain thinking.
Suddenly it occured to me that I could in fact be doing the work sheet IN ORDER! All of a sudden, I sensed a teeny change in my mind, like a change of gears or a change in temperature. It felt like blood was flowing to a new place. A new part of my brain was taking over from the non-linear part I was using. So it proves that different parts of the brain are used for different things.

I don't really agree with this because I am actually closer to the middle. I am more right brained, but not too much more. I like to play my guitar and write songs, but I am also quite organized too, even though I don't rely on it. I think that the test doesn't show enough circumstances to accurately process whether the person is left or right brained. I do agree that it is quite accurate though.

In my research, it said that left brain thinkers use logical sequencing, rational, analytical, objective, and looks at parts. For right brain thinkers, the same website said they were random, intuitive, holistic sythesizing, subjective, and they look at wholes. I think I use logical sequencing, but also random; I look at parts, but I also look at wholes. I think this shows that I am right down the middle.

The test says that I am 71% right brained and 29% left brained. I'm not sure if this is correct. I like art and music and that stuff but that seems like a lot of right. However I'm cool with this because according to Dan Pink I'm very well off for the future. I have the correct skill set needed by the conceptual age worker. I do like working with other people and i listen to really loud chiodos and red hots while i do homework and I do great on all
of it. According the Mr Pink this is good for me. I'm still trying to figure out why drawing things and writing stories will help me in life.

I am 40% left brained and 60% right brained! I agree with the test somewhat... I am very good at math and with numbers and i can put things in order relatively well, so i was a little surprising i wasn't more left brained. But i also have an overactive imagination so i guess that is what made me more right brained. I think Danial Pink is an extremely smart man, but a little on the crazy side. He writes as if this is going to be huge, but from what i've read about brains, it doesn't seem so huge... I think all of this is very interesting and it is making me think about things that i have never really considered before..

I am 64% left brained and 34% right brained, and I really agree with that assesment. I've always known I am really right brained, I like to make to do lists, organize, Im really good a spelling and algebra, all very left brained things.

I think that people really are left or right brained thinkers because most people do their thinking the same way most of the time, we don't variate and try some new kind of thinking because we know that the thinking we do workds and we don't want to change it. Some people are very logial and think in a very linear way, thinking about the facts, being oranized. Others are more scatterbrained, doing things on the spur of the moment, just for fun without really thinking about the facts at all.

In the article, I noticed that it made it clear that the left side is controlled by the right side of the brain and vice versa, and Pink wrote the same thing. I also thought it was really cool to see that left and right brain really does affect animals too, that was very interesting.

The test put me very close to the middle. I was 51% right brained and 49% left brained. I agree with this because my habits dont really fall into one area. I approach every situation differently which is why I think I was put here. Furthermore my strengths and weaknesses do not fall into a distinct area. For example my biggest strength was logic and I am an extremely good test taker yet I am also extremely disorganized and math is my weakest subject. Similarly I like to write and am a creative person but I struggle with drawing and design.

I am 49% left brained and 51% right brained, so, obviously my right side of my brain is dominant. According to the test, it says that, "In addition to being known as right-brained, you are also known as a creative thinker who uses feeling and intuition to gather information. You retain this information through the use of images and patterns." I believe that is pretty accurate. I do usually retain information easier by means of images. For instance, I can remember the picture of the Great Depression better than remembering a lecture that I got during the class. It then says, "Your thought process can appear quite illogical and meandering. The problem-solving techniques that you use involve free association, which is often very innovative and creative. The routes taken to arrive at your conclusions are completely opposite to what a left-brained person would be accustomed." I do use a sort of meandering path to come to my answers most of the time. It then states, "You probably find it easy to express yourself using art, dance, or music. Some occupations usually held by a right-brained person are forest ranger, athlete, beautician, actor/actress, craftsman, and artist, and those are actually some of the occupations I have thought of having, with the exception of beautician. The full assessment was,"You are more right-brained than left-brained. The right side of your brain controls the left side of your body. In addition to being known as right-brained, you are also known as a creative thinker who uses feeling and intuition to gather information. You retain this information through the use of images and patterns. You are able to visualize the "whole" picture first, and then work backwards to put the pieces together to create the "whole" picture. Your thought process can appear quite illogical and meandering. The problem-solving techniques that you use involve free association, which is often very innovative and creative. The routes taken to arrive at your conclusions are completely opposite to what a left-brained person would be accustomed. You probably find it easy to express yourself using art, dance, or music. Nick, i think that your right somewhat. I think this whole thing is, in the book, made into a bigger deal than it actually is. That is a the present moment. It will be many years before we notice anything much different that our old scool information age lives.

I am 44% left brain and 56% right brain. I mostly agree with these results. It makes sense to me because yeah I guess I am a creative thinker and like to learn in different ways than just reading out of a book, but I can also do math and logical thinking like that. I retain information by images or patterns that help me remember what I'm thinking. The test also said that my thought process can appear illogical and meandering which I really do agree with. No one knows what I'm really talking about when I tell them what I'm thinking even if we end up with the same idea or output. But what didn't really make sense to me about my results was the career paths that they said people like me tend to take. They said beautician, artist, actress, and forest rangers which are pretty much the complete opposites of what I would want to do in the future. My brain is confusing.

carolineb2012 said...

I though the test was a little off. It seems from the last class that it made more people out to be “right-brainers”. In fact it made me out to be a “right-brainer” also. Not that I mind. I appreciate being able to be creative and such, but sometimes I’m also a very logical person. It kind of felt like the test asked more questions that would make a person “right-brained” if they answered often, some, or occasionally, and would make them “left-brained” only if they answered rarely. I also didn’t like the way it was laid out that we could answer only often, some, occasionally, or rarely. On some of the questions I wanted put something like always or never. But on some of the things it said it totally made sense to me, such as when it said something about how an answer “feels right”. That completely made sense to me. I also don’t think being right-brained or left-brained should matter that much. I think that if you put your mind to doing anything, like making a to-do list, or doing something in a random order, you can do it. You can change your mind to fit your environment.

While looking through all of the posts so far I was surprised! I thought more people would be left brained. I certainly am. Most of this conclusion of 58% left brained and 42% right brained made perfect sense. I would love to be a doctor when I grow up, and am very organized. I make a to-do list every day after school, along with staring at my planner after every assignment I complete. Also, my closet is color coordinated and my room is very organized. Although I don't enjoy math all too well, it is easier to me than let's say english. However I was surprised because I can be a very random, creative person. I would absolutely love to be a professional dancer when I grow up too. It's very true, though, that I am "slower and love to put together every single detail..." I take extremely long on tests. I agree with my results and I just wonder why Daniel Pink thinks right brainers will "rule the world." As far as I'm concerned, you need to be both logical and creative to make a functional and physically appealing product. One without the other is useless. Just like our brains.

Personally, I am 64% right brained and 36% percent left. I think that the issue of dominant right brainers and left brainers is a bit overstated. The human brain is so complex and intracite that its hard to categorize people into two categories. The issues and experiences that we face in life make us who we are, not the "instinctual" aspects of our human nature. I do think that they are different functioning sides but in my opinion we use them both. If I was to take this test 5 years from now I doubt that I would have the same results. Maybe I may become more left brained as I mature of become involved in the reality of society.

My test said that I was 71% Left and 29% Right. While this is highly dominant left brain, I definately agree with the test. I am very organized and like things to be in the "right" order at all times. I do things like color code my closet and hate when things are messy. My friends often joke that I have OCD. I also really enjoy math and I am good at it. I like things that are logical and linear, with a strict answer. I am very unartistic and have difficulty apreciating things like art and poetry. My research said that Right brained people tend to be more emotional while Left brained are more sequential. I certainly shy away from the emotional stuff. I think that while Daniel Pink has some good ideas, I don't fully agree with him. It is not because I am left brained or anything, I simply think that his book stresses Right dominance too much and I think the future will be the most balanced people who can do a Left oriented job such as engineering or medicine or science and bring a new right brained aspect to the job.

I highly disagree with my results and I think that the test was very inaccurate at arriving at conclusions based off of questions that were in my opinion, ambivalent and could to apply to either an extremely right brained person or and extremely left brained person. My evaluation states that “You have the tendency to focus on rules and regulations rather than on creative approaches.” When it comes to assignments and projects, for example, in a math class, I have no choice but to follow directions, as I cannot approach a mathematical equation creatively. When it comes to an English project or a History project, there are many options to be explored. I completely disagree that I have “difficulty making "leaps of logic" which prevents me from making unique discoveries, or adapt to change during my thinking process.”

I disagree with how it said that I don't really pick up on small details, but I think that I see the small things before i see the big picture. I also disagree with how it said that I need to draw things out most of the time, becasue I can just picture everything in my mind without needing to draw anything. But other than that, everything was really accurate!

I agree with the test in that I am more left minded than right but I do not agree that I don't do well in memorizing things because to study I usually just memorize the whole thing. Inferences that you have towards someone or something is usually right mind because you have to think “creatively” on what might happen. Observations and logical thinking that you may have towards someone or something is usually left minded. This is explained in the brain assessment and article as well as Pink’s work. The reading of A Whole New Mind is very interesting and it spreads new ideas of what the future will be like.

I know it is not one of my stronger characteristics but it is not my weakest. My right brain percentages came out pretty even across the board. Intuitive came out relatively higher than the rest. My art class in 7th grade had the students taking tests similar to this one to find out if we were left brained or right brained. Every time a take a test like this, it seems as though I have always shown to be right brain prominent. As I read AWNM I realize more and more why I am right brained, and it makes a lot more sense.

I thought it would be interesting to take the test a second time and compare my results. The second test showed I was 52% left brain and 48% right brain. The first test placed me at 54% left brained and 46% right brained. My highest percentages the second time around were a little different that the first test. For instance my highest trait for left brain is verbal instead of symbolic.

This proves my hypothesis that one is not always going to be left/right brained dominate for a long period of time. The percent numbers or results for every test one takes are going to vary each time. I am going to make a statement that one is not more left brained than right (or the other way around). I am sure there are many people that are going to disagree with this so leave plenty of comments because I would love to see your counter points.

In regards to the article, I found it extremely interesting. My only question is, what hemisphere of the brain controls emotion or empathy?

My test showed that I am 51% right brained, and 49% left brained. This shows that I have the ability to see the big picture and break it down or work backwards to find the smaller pieces. I am also a creative thinker.

This result shows me that I use my left and right brain almost equally, and this enforces my opinion that the two halves have the ability (and what may be a necessity) to work in tandem.

I agree with my results because I like the more analytical aspects of math and science, but I also enjoy more creative subjects such as english and art. I also like to express myself through gestures and actions (commonly seen in dancers, and this is very accurate. I tend to be very animated when I speak or tell stories- I use motions and gestures to empahsize my point.

I’m not surprised that I am right brain. I love to be creative and to write and to draw. And I’m left handed so I assumed that had some correlation to being right brained but apparently it doesn’t. I also wasn’t surprised that my left and right brain percentages were as close as they are. In reading the descriptions in A Whole Knew Mind of each side, I could see parts of each in myself and how I learn. Sometimes I see the big picture and can be flexible and other times I need structure and focus on the details. I was surprised that “sequential” was my most dominant characteristic. I’ve never really noticed myself being sequential I seem to be more linear or random but I guess in the way I answered the questions it seemed more sequential. I’m anticipating doing more research and taking more tests to learn about myself and my brain.

About the article, I found it fascinating! Its just like Mr. Pink was saying about how the opposite side of the brain controls the side of the body, and how the left eye lit up the right brain etc. I wonder if which way they looked connected to an emotion.

kelseyc2012 said...

The test facilitated by the Art Institute of Vancouver informed me that I primarily use my right brain. I am, according to its evaluation, about 44% left-brained and 56% right-brained. It also claimed to determine which sectors within each half of my brain (right and left) are most prominent. On my left half of my brain I am dominantly reality-based; on my right side I am concrete. These answers intrigued me. I wanted to try another test, so I found one on a blog and it qualified me as a 55% left-brainer and 45% right-brainer. I do not know which of the tests would be more accurate, but the fact that they were different results with similar format and questions makes me wonder. Our brain is probably the most complex organ in our body and the most vital. It stores the data containing who we are as well as the programming of each other organ and more. How can we efficiently qualify an organ that is so unique to each individual? Motor functions are testable. The fact that the right brain controls the left body is generally accepted by society. It has been tested multiple times by various sources by doing experiments such as probing different sections of the mind and seeing how the body reacts. The internal affairs of the brain that do not produce a physical reaction however, are harder to test. How can we accurately measure the internal affairs of our brain? I do not understand. For now this spotty method has seemed to be accepted, but is it accurate? I would think not. Many of our classmates have produced results that would seem to show that they have more than 100% of a brain. How accurate can that be?

I would agree with the results of my test. I usaully will need to have sort of visual in my head to remember things and remember directions by landmarks more than street names. I will often go with my gut feeling on a test if i don't know the right answer.

Even though the test said i was right brained, i don't think you can seperate people into groups of either right brained or left brained. No matter what a person does they always are going to need to use both sides of your brain even if you tend to lean more to one side of your brain.

In Ms. Smith’s class we took a test after reading A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. The Score that I got on the assessment is shown below:
Left Brain Right Brain
53% 47%
You are more left-brained than right-brained. Your left brain controls the right side of your body. In addition to being known as left-brained, you are also known as a critical thinker who uses logic and sense to collect information. You are able to retain this information through the use of numbers, words, and symbols. You usually only see parts of the "whole" picture, but this is what guides you step-by-step in a logical manner to your conclusion. Concise words, numerical and written formulas and technological systems are often forms of expression for you. Some occupations usually held by a left-brained person include a lab scientist, banker, judge, lawyer, mathematician, librarian, and skating judge.

I would say over all that I agree with the test for many reasons. I will start off with the left brain percentages then follow with the right brain percentages and whether I agree or disagree with them and the order in which they fall in the list.
Okay I will start with the left brain. First on the list is Symbolic at 42%, this is my most dominant characteristic according to the test. The test said:
You have the ability to process the information of symbols at times, but you may need to first view the real object before you can understand what you are trying to process. For example, in solving math problems it occasionally helps you to "draw out" the problem, which allows you to better understand it through visualization. At other times you do not need visualization to aid you in forming your answers.
I would have to agree with the statement because when it comes to algebra I tend to get everything very quickly and do well at it. The next one on the list is Linear at 37%. The test said:
When processing information using this method, you will occasionally feel the need to see the "whole picture" before you are able to achieve results. At other times, you are able to piece all of the parts together in a straight and logical progression to form a whole, which then enables you to understand what you have processing. The information, your mood, and your level of comfortable are all factors that determine your response to a linear processing problem.
I would have to agree with this statement as well because I do feel that I do have to see the whole picture before I determine my response to a linear processing problem. Next on the list is Logical at 30%. The test said:
When processing information using this method, you may consider the information before you and produce a logical answer, or you may tend to go with your gut. You may discover that you can "guess" your way through S.A.T. questions about as accurately as you can deduce them. It is important that you nurture your ability to use logic whenever it is needed, but do not neglect other methods of processing information if you hit a logical roadblock.
There is no way on Earth that I could not agree with what this says. I feel that always before I say anything I think it over thoroughly before saying it also whenever I don’t know an answer on a test I just go with my gut feeling. After logical is Sequential at 22%. The test said:
You tend process information you receive without any priority as to which is processed first, last, or any place in between. It is difficult for you to learn or perform tasks involving sequence. For example, spelling is a task that involves sequence and you may experience problems remembering exact spelling or any type of rote memorization, for that matter. Creating daily lists and plans are probably not activities you enjoy. If you are having problems with tasks involving sequence, there are methods you can use to improve your skills. One method involves using colors to learn sequence. You assign a color to each task. For example, you may want to make the first step green, the second step blue, and the last step red. This helps because the right side of the brain, your dominant side in this case, is sensitive to colors. The important thing to remember is that consistently using the same sequence will help you both improve and recognize that this strategy can be used in many different circumstances involving sequence.
I would have to say that in this case I disagree with this statement because I always have to do things in order and I also am only not good at spelling because I was never taught to spell when I was in kinder garden and first grade. I had to learn how to sound it out in the second grade so when I switched schools I was behind. Next is Reality-based at 20%. The test said:
The information you process may lack a basis on reality, but it does open the door to creativity. You do not show much focus for rules and regulations and do not adjust well to change in the environment. In fact, upon experiencing change in the environment, it spurs you to try to change it yourself instead of adjusting to it. Whenever you become emotionally involved in project you are more likely to learn and succeed.
I would have to say that I agree with the last statement, but everything else I disagree with because I have been told in the past by people that I have a very strong grip on reality. Then last on the Left Brain list is Verbal at 0%. The test says:
You are not a verbal person. When you process your thoughts, you tend to use very few words, preferring instead to illustrate a problem or solution. You often find yourself in situations where it is hard for you to "find the right words." Upon reading or hearing new information, you must first create a "mental video" before you can process and understand the information of your thoughts. For example, when giving directions, you probably use many gestures with your hands such as pointing and leaning, and also refer to visual structures such as "a McDonalds" or "the big tree" instead of street names or exact mileage.
I would have to agree with this because I am very shy person unless I have known someone for a long time.
Now, the Right Brain percentages are going to be examined in the order in which they appear on the table at the top. First is Intuitive, my most dominate Right Brain characteristic, which is 34%. The test said:
When processing information, at times you are able to go with your "gut" instincts. At other times you may doubt your instincts, or prefer to put information together piece by piece to form your conclusion. You should be careful not to ignore your intuition, but at the same time do not solely rely on it.
I would agree with this statement 100%. It sounds like me in a nutshell. Next on the list is Fantasy-oriented at 29%. The test said:
You have the ability to use both creativity and reality to process the information you receive. This is a unique gift that allows you to both focus on rules and regulations but to also act with creativity. You are able to adjusting to change, even though you might not like it, and you can become emotionally involved in your work if it interests you.
Like the last category I completely agree with this and it completely sounds like me. The next category is Concrete at 19%. The test said:
When you process information you have received, the real object is not important to you. You do not have to use the real object to make sense of what you have processed. For example, if solving a math problem you do not have to "draw out" the problem in order to find or understand the answer, and you do not have to visualize something to understand it. However, this also means you often neglect the physical information provided by a concrete example. In other words, you may miss the forest for the trees, trying to deduce something complex when the answer is plain to see.
Once again this is me in a nutshell. The next category is Holistic at 18%. The test said:
You have difficulty seeing the whole picture, especially at the beginning of a project. You tend to process information you receive from its parts to its whole in a straight, progressive manner. When given a task, you tend to not bother asking "why," but instinctively are able to do it.
Once again this sounds like me and I have nothing to disagree. The category that follows this is Random at 17%. The test said:
You tend to not process data randomly, preferring instead to follow a systematic, logical order from first to last. You have difficulty making "leaps of logic" which prevents you from making unique discoveries, or adapt to change during your thinking process.
I am sorry to have to repeat myself again, but this sounds exactly like me. The next category is Nonverbal at 13%. The test said:
You have little ability in nonverbal processing. When you process your thoughts and ideas you mainly use words instead of illustrations. For example, if you were giving directions you may say, "Continue traveling west for 3 miles and turn north at the intersection." You would give exact, logical directions in a very sequential manner.
I am once again very sorry, but this time for a different reason. This time I must apologize for breaking the pattern. I completely disagree with this statement. I give directions based on surroundings. Over all I would say that I agree with the results that the test gave.

Agreeing or disagreeing with the assessment of the brain would mean that I understand how I learn, how I think, and who I am. This I am trying to figure out, more accurately to create. Some days visuals work best for me the next moment verbal; structure no structure... and on and on. I am defiantly a changing learner, and a test with set boundaries, might not show that. I am probably not too extreme though, some where in the middle, like the test showed. The interesting part is that when I took the test I scored very close to center, I then asked my mother to take the test with Kailyn replacing the “I” and separately asked my dad to do the same. They scored opposite extremes.

Oh well I guess that is just me...

What I don’t understand, (I’ve tried looking it up but I must not be looking in the right places) is what makes someone left or right brained? It seems like we are discussing qualities that result from a stronger left or right brain not what actually makes you right or left brained.(are you good at drawing because you are right brained, or are you right brained because you are good at drawing) Is it something in our DNA, or is it something we are taught? But to be taught which brain to think with, that sounds ridiculous! And yet aren’t we taught art, and math, and reading, aren’t we taught to either love school or hate it? Or is it a unconscious decision on our part, perhaps it is environment? Any opinions... I would love to know

Thanks!

According to the test I am 68% right brained and 32% left brained.
Left Brain Percentages:
43% Reality –based
27% sequential
25% symbolic
16% linear
14% verbal5% logical

Right Brain Percentages
65% holistic
50% random
44% fantasy oriented
28% concrete
20% intuitive
19% nonverbal

I both agree and disagree with my results when looking at them from different circumstances. The results referred to math and science a lot for problem solving and said that I probably have difficulty with such areas. Yes, I do have to draw out pictures like they said, but when I’m really focused on what I’m doing in all subjects at school, I can pass without hesitation. When I switch from school to social, though, I completely turn around, which is how the results do seem to reflect what I’m like – the way I act, handle situations, and my creativity. This really got me thinking, though, about what causes someone to be more R-Directed or L-Directed compared to the other side. Is it just how we are, or is it, maybe, a learning experience from our past and how we were raised and taught?

Both Pink and the researchers studying the Magpies would agree that the body is regulated by the opposite hemispheres of the brain. With the Magpies, based on certain reactions, they would use their right eye and left hemisphere or left eye and right hemisphere. Humans do the same. Right controls left and left controls right.

So far, I think the reading of AWNM is really interesting. It’s filled with information I normally would never pay attention to and it’s very helpful in making people aware of what we, as a nation, could someday be in the future.

In my “Creativity test” I scored 42% left brain and a 58% right brain.
Your Left Brain Percentages

50% Symbolic (Your most dominant characteristic)
43% Linear
27% Reality-based
21% Logical
18% Sequential
0% Verbal (Your least dominant characteristic)

Your Right Brain Percentages
45% Random (Your most dominant characteristic)
38% Nonverbal
37% Concrete
32% Fantasy-oriented
30% Holistic
29% Intuitive (Your least dominant characteristic)

I found this extremely interesting, because my parents and family have always said I was very intuitive, however this test labeled it as my least dominant trait. There are many things, however, that when I read them I could remember a time in the past 24 hours that I had done that exact thing or been in that exact situation. For example, in the “symbolic processing” section it said, solving math problems it said, ”…occasionally helps you to "draw out" the problem, which allows you to better understand it through visualization. “ in third period geometry TODAY I absolutely HAD to draw out the problem or else it would get jumbled in my head. Also, it said, “You assign a color to each task. For example, you may want to make the first step green, the second step blue, and the last step red. This helps because the right side of the brain, your dominant side in this case, is sensitive to colors.” You should see my student planner. Wow. I have every subject color coated, every single day, green for biology, pink/red for geometry, orange for U.S. History, and blue for English. It is difficult for me to comprehend it any other way. It just feels wrong to look at my planner and only see a blob of grey scribbles, it would all clump together and I would forget half my homework. Same with directions. I absolutely have to have visual symbols to go by because street signs and “go two miles and turn right” does not work for me. I think that this test definitely described me to a T

I too agree with this test; I have never taken a right brain test vs. left brain test before so, I never truly could say that I was right brain or left brain, I only had a suspicion. I had always thought that I was right brained because I talk a lot with my hands , my thoughts process always sounds random to other people, I am (which you all will learn about later) and a visual spatial learner, thus I predicted that I was a right brain thinker, I now have confirmed that. My test results were 60% right brain and 40%. For left brain I had 37% linear (most dominant characteristic) and 7%Verbal (least dominant characteristic). For right brained 57% fantasy- oriented (most dominant characteristic) and 18%holistic (least dominant characteristic).
Before I understood that right brain was creative and left brain was more logical, but I still had some things that I was still confused about, for example why I was right brained and what made me that way. After taking this test, everything makes sense, “You retain this information through the use of images and patterns. You are able to visualize the "whole" picture first, and then work backwards to put the pieces together to create the "whole" picture. Your thought process can appear quite illogical and meandering. The problem-solving techniques that you use involve free association, which is often very innovative and creative,” this described me as a person word for word.
In ‘Specialized Brain Hemispheres Provide More Efficiency,’ it describes the magpie’s brain it says that the magpie thinks with it’s right hemisphere of the brain. When thinking comes to humans, we too think mostly like the magpies; most of the kids in class today said that they were predominantly thinking with their right side of their brain. Even though we humans are tested in a left brain world (SAT for college, any test, math, science…), even a good majority of the population is right brained.

I took the test twice, just to see how my answers would vary, and oddly enough they turned out the exact opposite! The first time I was 49% left brained and 51% right, and the second time around 51% left and 49% right.
The first trial I agree with almost to the tee. It says that I see the whole picture at the beginning of a project, that how I solve a problem completely depends upon my mood, I am average at spelling and maths, and pretty dead on about the not being able to “find the right words” when expressing myself and being emotionally invested in my work.
One thing the test was completely off about though is how and when I ask questions. I think I ask too many questions too often, it said that I rarely wanted to aks or know the reasons WHY for different projects.
When researching and taking several other tests, I found that they all gave relatively the same results, but I think they are just people’s assessments of personality types not necessarily what side of the brain you use more often

I am 51 to 49 left to right brained. Balance is good. The test isn't concise or defenitive, and lacking in creativity itself. How would other's think of the test? Was it formulated right or left?

In the Brain Article, I found it very interesting that the bird would observe with a different eye based on it's intentions. It made sense that when it was going to examine the predator further it would use it's right eye, therefore exercising the left part of it's brain, which, as Daniel Pink has pointed out many times in A Whole New Mind, is the more analytical and logical part of the brain. This way the bird would be able to gather facts and information about the predator, because it is forcing itself to use the left side of it's brain.

Hey Mrs. Smith sorry I'm a little late, but I did the test I received 54% left brained, I tottally agree with the test, especially since I think of myslef as right about 50-50 with it tapering towards left. This is mostly because, I'm better at algebra or more left brained skills.
