Alexandra- I agree because power is an addicting thing and the government doesn't want to give up that power.

Maxe2012 said...

Carolyn- they are supposed to have some control because otherwise everything would be a battle. However, the government is supposed to take the citizen's opinion into consideration and if the people are overwhelmingly against an action or a law, the government should side with the people.

Carolyn F. said...

Max,
Another point, what exactly is 'happy'? Happy is different for all people. Are you saying the government should create a Utopia? How can the government achieve the unachievable?

PeterH2012 said...

Robert- EXACTLY!!! It's not a religion, it's a relationship! Please do go more into what you were saying! I really want to hear more of your thoughts on this topic.

alexandriab2012 said...

Caroyln-
Do you truely think that government is truely doing it's job? People aren't happy- a majority- so maybe it should change a little bit more so then more people would be happy , becuase the gov. is supposed to be governing us so then we can be happier.

connorm said...

Robert- i would actually like it very much to hear what you have to say.

The strict meaning of the Christian life is to praise and bring glory to God our creator and father. That is easily elaborated into an infinate number of possibilities. Using your talents brings glory to God. This also goes with the "making the world a better place" philosophy. Any other Christians want to rant with me?

nickb2012 said...

carolyn- it's not the only way to learn, we also learn through school, and from experience, as well as interacting with others. The gov't has still taken away the learning in school. The gov't has taken away the interacting with others as well. Instead, they give the script to people and they don't even think about what they are saying, because they think its fun.

leslie-
I don't believe that everyone will help everyone else. At some point the chain will break and fall apart. I think honestly the one person you can rely on is yourself. I don't mean to sound untrusting but there is no 100% chance someone will come through for you.

robertc2012 said...

Jay and others- For me, being a Christian is to serve God all my life and bring others to Jesus. Everyone else is talking about happiness. Trying to find happiness is trying to fill up that empty part of you. Everyone has felt that at some point, that emptiness inside of you. People try to fill this with everything from friends to TV to parties, but only God can fill that. For me, knowing God is happiness.
There you have it.

HannahG said...

Alex- the government's job isn't to make people happy. They need to do what is best for the entire country even if some people are not 'happy'.

Carolyn F. said...

Max,
So you think that without the govt. controlling that there is battle? Is that the only thing that the government keeps "in control"? Isn't there battle now? That would mean the govt. isn't controlling, but I thought you said that the government is overly controlling.

mariep2012 said...

John - Do you mean that you think that everyone has their own "mission" that they have to pursue in life, because I agree with that. I still think that the meaning of life is to be happy by serving others.

connorm said...

Bayley- there goal is to achieve happiness by telling them that watching tv doesn't make them happy then you are taking away what they believe is the only thing that makes them happy and i agree its very shallow of them but you don't have the right to take it away from them.

Maxe2012 said...

Carolyn- I'm saying the government should listen to the people, I am not saying the government should make a utopia, we have established that that is impossible.

loganc2012 said...

Alex- Is government's role to make people happy or to protect them, to do what's best for the people. Is what's best always what makes people happy? Is it possible that the government in 451 believes what they are doing is best for the people?

jays2012 said...

Robert- that is very true. I think that people use those things to fill in the spot of happiness. It is only a temporary fulfillment. In the end, having a good party won't help you.

Carolyn F. said...

Nick-
Good point.

Alex-
Yes, I truly believe the government is doing it's job. Maybe I'm happy with it, maybe I'm not, but either way the job is getting done.

Maxe2012 said...

hannah- What if the government thinks they should go to war and 80% of the people are against it? Should the government still do what they think is best?

sammiet2012 said...

Bayley- If you are falsely happy then wouldn't you feel unhappy and if you could feel and you knew you were unhappy then how come you wouldn't change this society?

alexandriab2012 said...

Nick-
I agree because without school we wouldn't be able to be as social as much as we are, we wouldn't learn new wierd facts, and we wouldn't know how to love - because I don't know about you but if I had a brother I diffentantly WOULDN'T like marrying my brother.

kaleidoscope_eyes said...

austin- true, but that's a chance we will have to take. Are you going to be fall to the depths of human existance because you think that's what the rest of the world will do? It is a dog eat dog world, but we have to rise above that and do what we know is right!

kaleidoscope_eyes said...

robert- AMEN!!!

bayleyk2012 said...

Connor- no but they shouldn't have dropped to that level. It shows that this society is really messed up.

PeterH2012 said...

Robert- Bravo! Things of this world can bring you happiness, But Knowing that the God of the universe loves you and wants to talk to you can bring joy. The kind of joy that warms your heart and makes it impossible to not smile! To me, Farenheit 451 is about a life without God, a life without true love.

HannahG said...

Max- Good point. I am not really sure how to answer that one... Anyone want to help?

Carolyn F. said...

Max,
But happiness is unachievable. I do agree that they should take into consideration our opinion. In Ms. Crosby's room she has a sign that says, "happiness is a journey, not a destination." Do you agree?

loganc2012 said...

Why is it that Montag focuses so much on the moon?

AustinW2012 said...

leslie-
what is right to you is not the same as what is right to another.

connorm said...

Robert- so what would you do if you ever had to talk with an irrational Muslim about religion?

Carolyn F. said...

Robert-
You have some good views on Christianity.

robertc2012 said...

Jay- that's right. People can only temporarily fill up their lives with objects and experiences. Only Jesus can permanantly fill that spot forever.

PeterH2012 said...

For anyone who wants to talk about this subject more,I(and i'm sure many others) would be happy to talk to you about this.

kaleidoscope_eyes said...

austin- so is it "right to you" to steal? to kill?

AustinW2012 said...

leslie-
no it is not but to some it is.

Maxe2012 said...

Carolyn- I agree happiness is a journey and I agree that the government should do what is best for the people. However, the government can't possibly be doing what is best for the people when most of the people disagree with the government.

sammiet2012 said...

Logan- He might think of the moon as a happier more peaceful place with no worries.

connorm said...

Peter- i think its a very valid point you have because without religion there is no emotion like inspiration or love or any kind of deep feeling to live off.

robertc2012 said...

Wow. Thanks everyone. Great discussion. Have an awesome day.

alexandriab2012 said...

Carolyn, I agree, however, that is the goal in life to achieve "happiness."

kaleidoscope_eyes said...

hey, if i make a post on my blog about religion and the meaning of life, could we continue this there?

connorm said...

Leslie- sure please do but i am agreeing with austin about what your saying.

connorm said...

Bayley- the world of 451 has one person sitting at the tv and doing nothing there are many people doing that today and i consider this day and age the pinnacle of human civilization but, if you want to take away those peoples happiness because they fell and nobody was there to catch them, why would u keep throwing them down and not helping them. Use a kinder way than saying there civilization is at a very low sinking level and instead use something that would help them climb back up.

As I skimmed through the blogs earlier, I saw a lot of people talking about the meaning of life and happiness. Leslie and others mentioned how they intertwine and that the meaning of life is happiness, and as much as I think that happiness is a part of it, I really believe that there is no one meaning. Everyone has their outlooks on life and its meaning. Leslie said that it is not just our own happiness as it is to make others happy, but I would have to disagree. Call me selfish, but I would much rather put my own happiness before almost anyone else because in the end, it’s my life and I want to live it the way I’ve always dreamed. If I try to make others happy before myself, I won’t be satisfied. If someone wants to be happy, they will find their way. Jay and Robert agreed that they find happiness in knowing God but others, such as myself, may not know that happiness either because we aren’t part of certain religious group, we don’t believe, or we just haven’t decided yet, but we, whoever we are, will still find our own way to happiness. I don’t think this means, though, that I have fulfilled the meaning of life even the slightest bit.
