Justin: So if it is torture to some, why does the government do it? If they are trying to keep everyone equal and protect everyone, why would they do something that makes some miserable?
Katie- I am not sure if the society will feel the same but just the people who are really thinking and questioning the society. The society will be forced to change and the people who can't think for themselves will only follow the corruption or the change. They are like zombies.
Brooke-Yes. the only thing we can control is our actions. If we can control the actions connected to our feelings we can, in effect, control how we are feeling.
Brooke: I agree, some people do need to be controlled, but does everyone? This also shows that there could not be a utopia, or world peace. If world peace became possible, the one initiating it would be a great deciever, because it is not possible. It would be great, but it just isn't humanly possible.
Kinsey: They do it because it is not in best interest to us, but to themselves. The Government is made up by people. If enough of them thinks that by 'torturing' us it will keep us safe, I think that they might do it.
Ziven- But if you think about it burning books and mental handicaps are doing the same thing to the society. They both are causing the people within it to not think for themselves or live a life without actually living.
Leah- Why is it assumed that technology always blamed for people not "feeling" as much. Earlier in history, people never really talked about how they felt. Maybe now people just expect more of eachother
Jacob: what if they have a negative outlook but they don't want to? What if they can't help having a negative outlook on life? And if they wanted to have a negative outlook then they would be satisfied not happy.
In the last part of the fishbowl we were discussing how the ideas expressed in 451 relate to education in the society we all live in. I thought this was really interesting because alot of what we learn in school is not nearly as valuable as things we could be learning about and just seems like fluff to stuff our brains and keep us working. I mean the world is falling apart in many ways and we are being taught geometry and geology... How is that going to help us find a cure for cancer, a way out of Iraq or even get a job... Yes we make excuses about learning things but they are really just that excuses created by teachers who really a certain subject and dont want to admit it is extremely irrelavent in modern life (I am not saying they are not fun or interesting, I am simply saying they are useless...). I think this is a serious crisis in terms of education and this book really speaks to that, reguardless of whether Bradbury meant to or not...
Learning geology will help you find a job if you want to be a geologist. But the things we learn today are important life skills to have and know. It is important to learn a variety of things so you can decide what you want your job to be. You don't want to be like Montag and be a fireman just because your father was. You want to be able to do what you want with your life.
caroline and Katie- i agree with you both as well. Guy is changing and that could forshadow future change throught the entire sociaty. It seems like a snowball effect. It started with Clarise effecting Guy and now he is out to change people.
Kinsey- is there even government in Farenheight 451? Nobody ever speaks of them. To me it seems that their whole sociaty is dangling on a thread. If enough people decide to read or be different it will crumble if there is no government to hold it together.
Kailyn- I believe they are content, not happy. This sociaty doesn't seem to understand abstract qualities like that. They barely even notice what is around them, I doubt they take time to reflect on whats in them. They are very materialistic it seems

Meg and inner circle - Are you happy and how do you know, if these people didnt even know that they were not happy?
Katie- I am not sure if the society will feel the same but just the people who are really thinking and questioning the society. The society will be forced to change and the people who can't think for themselves will only follow the corruption or the change. They are like zombies.
Kinsey- Is that they only thing we can control to change how we feel?
Jacob: If people have a negative outlook on life they aren't going to want to be happy.
Inner Circle: How do you think this society has corrupted things we see and feel in our world?
Anna - But in Harrison they didn't burn books they put handicaps on people. Harrison is more of a criticism of forced equality.

Kailyn-ok there is life and then there is living. In your life you live and die but who says your life ends when you die?
What does the outside circle think about connections between LOF and 451?
Kinsey: They do it because it is not in best interest to us, but to themselves. The Government is made up by people. If enough of them thinks that by 'torturing' us it will keep us safe, I think that they might do it.

Allison- if they have and outlook of negivivity then they would be satisfied or even happy that they prevented themselves from being happy.
Justin- So are you saying that this government in 451 is looking out for their own interests not the interests of the people?
Jacob: what if they have a negative outlook but they don't want to? What if they can't help having a negative outlook on life? And if they wanted to have a negative outlook then they would be satisfied not happy.
